Medal card here, probably, http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D4800630 - but no indication of any decorations, and shown as a private, so not clear how he would get MC

Hi

Pte in 9th Norfolk (30666) and 1st Essex (41931)

Discharged 10 February 1919.

Not sure where any gallantry medals come into it

Regards,

Graeme

Hi Mike,

Is there any chance that you can post a better/blown up version of the certificate? It looks like his rank is given as "Regt Sgt Major", and I can see the letters for the medals, but can't read that section - nor the others really.

Thanks

Chris

Hi

Not sure about the validity of that document.

Certainly no MC index card and all the other documents, at best, make him a Lance Corporal,

Does his discharge parchment look a little dodgy?

What clerk would write, for example, DCM mdl when the M = medal? And are there some "nil" entries that have been obscured? What are "mill threes" for specialist qualifications?

Might he be a "Walt" as they say these days?

here is a photo of the full doc, showing number 8824 top left. Would a duplicate be housed elsewhere?post-38332-0-02319400-1425924484_thumb.j

  • Thought it was a little odd with only two medals, I expect it got him a few pints bought when he got back home and also found him a good job as he was a deputy at Sherburn Hill Colliery Im told. His two medals look like they have been worn around the naming on the edge, they say: PTE.

Well they were given to me and I'm sure there is a story behind this chap, will need to do some digging. I remember him as an old man who was not afraid to use his walking stick on young rascal's like myself

Hello, JJH Redden married my great grandmother Dorothy Brown. I have their marriage certificate, and his birth details, but that's about it. I don't even think they had any children together. Do you have any information about her? Anything would be appreciated! Cheers

Charmaine
