10th Hussar DCM Posted 8 March , 2015 Share Posted 8 March , 2015 (edited) I have just been given an envelope with a few items in belonging to J.J.H.Redden, Norfolk Regt. He was from Shadforth, Durham. I would love to find out more about how he was awarded his medals, MM,DCM,MC. David_Underdown Posted 9 March , 2015 Share Posted 9 March , 2015 Medal card here, probably, http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D4800630 - but no indication of any decorations, and shown as a private, so not clear how he would get MC
GraemeClarke Posted 9 March , 2015 Share Posted 9 March , 2015 Hi Pte in 9th Norfolk (30666) and 1st Essex (41931) Discharged 10 February 1919. Not sure where any gallantry medals come into it Regards, Graeme
clk Posted 9 March , 2015 Share Posted 9 March , 2015 Hi Mike, Is there any chance that you can post a better/blown up version of the certificate? It looks like his rank is given as "Regt Sgt Major", and I can see the letters for the medals, but can't read that section - nor the others really. Thanks Chris

GraemeClarke Posted 9 March , 2015 Share Posted 9 March , 2015 Hi Not sure about the validity of that document. Certainly no MC index card and all the other documents, at best, make him a Lance Corporal, Graeme
Muerrisch Posted 9 March , 2015 Share Posted 9 March , 2015 Does his discharge parchment look a little dodgy? What clerk would write, for example, DCM mdl when the M = medal? And are there some "nil" entries that have been obscured? What are "mill threes" for specialist qualifications? Might he be a "Walt" as they say these days? 10th Hussar DCM Posted 9 March , 2015 Author Share Posted 9 March , 2015 (edited) Thought it was a little odd with only two medals, I expect it got him a few pints bought when he got back home and also found him a good job as he was a deputy at Sherburn Hill Colliery Im told. His two medals look like they have been worn around the naming on the edge, they say: PTE. Mike Edited 9 March , 2015 by 10th Hussar DCM
10th Hussar DCM Posted 10 March , 2015 Author Share Posted 10 March , 2015 (edited) Well they were given to me and I'm sure there is a story behind this chap, will need to do some digging. I remember him as an old man who was not afraid to use his walking stick on young rascal's like myself Edited 10 March , 2015 by 10th Hussar DCM
Guest charmaine_ferreira Posted 14 September , 2016 Share Posted 14 September , 2016 Hello, JJH Redden married my great grandmother Dorothy Brown. I have their marriage certificate, and his birth details, but that's about it. I don't even think they had any children together. Do you have any information about her? Anything would be appreciated! Cheers Charmaine
