There is a service record for him on Ancestry showing he enlisted 22nd August 1914. His Soldier's Effects record shows went to his wife Ellen. There are a couple of pension cards. This shows his widow's address and his three children - the youngest born after he was killed. With those birth dates should be able to find birth certificates and marriage certificate  and 1911 Census on Scotland's people. He was 24 when he enlisted, so born around 1890.

His 14-15 Star medal roll shows he went to France 11th May 1915 with 12th Battalion Royal Scots. His BWM/VM medal roll showing 12th then 11th then 16th RS.

Here is the birth certificate for his daughter Ellen  - registered by her mother after his death. This gives a marriage date for the parents so easy to find marriage certificate. In turn shows parent's names and that he was a coal miner. His soldier's will was written prior to going overseas - at that time he was with C Coy 12th Battalion.

Worked as a hairdresser (according to 1911 census), but stated he was shop porter on his enlistment forms. However Army Casualty form also mentions hairdresser. Lived at 7 Murdoch Terrace, Edinburgh in 1914. William married Ann Hope in 1915, before the battalion moved to France and his daughter was born.

Survived Somme 1916, Arras, Ypres but was shot in the heel at Lys on 9th April 1918. Spent much of 1918 in hospital before moving to depot at Nigg, caught Flu a few weeks later and died 7 Nov 1918. According to the McCrae book he was the last original recruit to die during the war. I believe only 30 of the original recruits were in the 16th when it was disbanded in May 1918!

William is buried at North Merchiston, Edinburgh, not far from Murdoch Terrace.

Service record survives, but no photo (apart from his grave). If anyone has any more info or a photo I'd like to see it!

Hi Steve I’ve joined after coming across your post via Google. My Grandad recently passed away and we have been looking through old documents etc. It seems that William Mackie is also a relation to us, he is my great grannies brother who also lived a murdoch terrace. It would be great to maybe have a on;one chat with you

25286 Pte Peter Watt Martin , 16th Battalion Royal Scots who was killed in action aged 28 on the 3rd of July 1916.

19830 Company Sergeant Major Alexander Lindsay 16th  ( McRaes ) Battalion Royal Scots. An original Battalion member “ Sandy “ Lindsay was a well known person in the 16th , he survived the war eventually becoming secretary of the 16th Battalion association. He is mentioned three times in Jack Alexanders book “ McRaes Battalion”.he was from Edinburgh
