david murdoch Posted 16 January , 2017 Share Posted 16 January , 2017 Colin. That first picture you posted he was a captain in A&SH (Territorial Cadet Force) in 1925. Second when he was wounded and at hospital in Huddersfield in April 1918 - he was wounded again in May 1918. I think he went to 9th either after this wounding or in August 1918 when 16th was disbanded. The photos I have of him in 9th look to be summer photos so must be 1918. The portrait photo was taken in a studio in his home town Kilsyth - probably when home on leave. He gained his RS number at Etaples, but I don't know who he was with between joining up and going overseas. He stated in a court appearance after the war he had joined A&SH, but possibly was with an RS home service battalion also. This photo I'm posting - home on leave - you can see the difference in him - been in action for sure. When this was taken his parents were probably not expecting to see him again - the town had a pretty high casualty rate. His mother looks sick with worry and his father pretty grim. Only his two youngest sisters too young to understand.

david murdoch Posted 22 January , 2017 Share Posted 22 January , 2017 Three more 16th RS with connections to Kilsyth. Thomas Adamson and Robert Neil are both listed on the Kilsyth Town and Victoria Bands plaque on the local Bandstand. Thomas Adamson was from Bathgate but working in Kilsyth. They enlisted at different times, but Robert Neil may have been influenced to join specifically 16th RS by Thomas as he travelled to Edinburgh to enlist. They were either friends or certainly acquainted through the band. Guest Posted 30 September , 2018 Share Posted 30 September , 2018 I'm researching Alexander Drysdale Lugton. He was at Boroughmuir school until the summer of 1914 then he matriculated as an undergraduate at Edinburgh University. He enlisted into the Student Company of McCrae’s Battalion on the 30th November 1914, he had just turned eighteen years old. His regimental number was 18841. He was trained as a machine gunner. He transferred from the Royal Scots to the 101st Company of the Machine Gun Corps (probably about 1916). His MGC number was 70987. On 1st July 1916 at the Somme he was hit by a piece of shrapnel but was saved by the bible in his breast pocket (we have the bible with the shrapnel embedded). In March 1918 he was transferred to the MGC Training Centre at Alnwick. He survived the war without serious injuries and resumed his studies at Edinburgh University, graduating BSC and MA. He became a teacher and then headmaster at various schools in Fife. Any information about his service or the Student Company in general is welcomed. The trews appear to be Leslie tartan to me, which would be KOSB. The cap badge also appears to be that of the KOSB.
