John Beech Posted 4 February , 2015 Share Posted 4 February , 2015 Evening All Leonard Bagshawe was appointed Second Lieutenant (On Probation) with 3rd Battalion KOSB on 4th September 1914, was appointed Lieutenant 9th November 1914 and Captain 2nd February 1915. At some point early in 1915, he was attached to Northumberland Fusiliers. This is an entry in LG saying this was effective 17th March (LG 16th March) but a further note of appears in LG on 19th March saying this was cancelled. Can anyone confirm date of attachment? He was killed on 16th June 1915 with 1st Northumberland Fusiliers at Bellewaarde whilst commanding X Company and is commemorated on the Menin Gate. Apparently, he was shot and killed instantly as he reached the parapet of the first German trench and was buried in the locality but his grave was subsequently lost. John Beech Posted 5 February , 2015 Author Share Posted 5 February , 2015 Hi Dave Thanks for your response. De Ruvigny's Roll of Honour shows similar dates and the articles do suggest he went to France with the NF and was with them sometime. However, the NF Regimental History only mentions him around the date of his death. FMP has an index suggesting service with 2nd Battalion KOSB and I was unclear whether he initially went to France with them, particularly as the LG entries suggest a planned transfer in March 1915. To confuse matters, LLT suggests that 3rd Battalion KOSB trained at Portland and Weymouth in 1914 then moved to Edinburgh in April 1915, so no mention of training in Sunderland. 3rd Battalion NF did move to Sunderland sometime in 1914. Neither his MIC or Medal Roll entries make mention of being on attachment. Regards John
