Remembered Today:

German 1911 Maxim ammo boxes

Have been struggling to identify the marks on these boxes, I have 3. But in fact as I prepared this post I have made progress!

Key was finding the correct name: Patronenkasten 11

That lead me to realising that the AW stands for Artilleriewerkstätten, which I had kind of guessed. But thought that St was Stettin, but it is Strasbourg I think as I have just found this "Artilleriewerkstätten, in Deutschland unter militärischer Direktion stehende Fabriken, in denen die Artilleriefahrzeuge und Artilleriegeräte angefertigt werden. Solcher A. gibt es in Spandau, Deutz, Danzig, Straßburg t. E., Dresden und München; Österreich: in Wien."

I guess the 7 and 24 are inspector numbers? The Strasbourg boxes are stamped on the lid tops and on the handle bases and lock base (one set with no visible inspector number). The Dresden box is clearly stamped under the lid.

Cheers,

Tony
