I somehow thought that Cyprus was a 19th century, or earlier, acquisition. Was this done as a strategic move with one eye on Turkey, and the other on the Suez canal? Terry Denham Posted 5 November , 2004 Share Posted 5 November , 2004 Following a Convention with Turkey (Ottoman Empire) the United Kingdom took over the administration of Cyprus on 11th July 1878. The event in 1914 was merely a formal annexation. However, the purpose in 1878 was for the very reasons as you suggest. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
