Guest bakey1959 Posted 4 May , 2003 Share Posted 4 May , 2003 On my father's birth certificate it gives his father (my grandfather) as Bert Baker, Army Pensioner, Late Private, South Wales Borderers. Earlier in October 1919, on an Uncle's birth certificate it gives him as Army Pensioner, Late Private, Army Corps (Coal Miner). I am not sure of the sequence of events here, but an uncle has told me that during his service, he suffered from the results of Mustard gas attacks in Flanders. What does the term 'Late' in Late Private refer to, and does anyone know if it would be worth visiting the Welsh Regiment in Brecon to carry out any research. Better than that did anyone out there know a 'Bert' Baker, his real name was Samuel Bert Baker, but it looks like he never used the Samuel. He would have been about 18 or 19 years old at the outbreak of WW1. Regards Christopher Baker bakey1959@hotmail.com
Guest Ian Bowbrick Posted 4 May , 2003 Share Posted 4 May , 2003 'Late' Private means that was the rank he held before being discharged. Ian
