PS: Oh, and while I remember (thinking on Junger), either of you two know if a copy (in German) of W.Flex, Der Wanderer zwischen beiden Welten - ein Kriegserlebnis and/or R.Binding, Aus dem Kriege is on line?

Der Wanderer - https://digital.staatsbibliothek-berlin.de/werkansicht?PPN=PPN684645815&PHYSID=PHYS_0005&view=fulltext-parallel&DMDID=DMDLOG_0001

Thanks anyway Charlie - and apologies for partly usurping the thread... And this edition easier as it has a parallel page Latin script text!

Two members of 5/IR79 at Munster Lager in July 1908. One of the soldiers is Wilhelm Steinmetz who was wounded during the fighting near Aiseau between 22 & 24 August 1914. Unfortunately the lettering on the Gibraltar cuff title cannot be seen.

Interesting that they have the pre-war blue blouses on. Also nice muzzle-caps on the rifles. Do you have a date for the photograph?

Duh... I did get new glasses... Put it down to lack of concentration when replying in our small 2-bedroom flat with rampant kids (1 x 12 and 1 x 10 and their 2 x mates) playing Fortnite in next bedroom, and visiting ma-in-law and my SWMBO gossiping loudly talking with neighbours in front room about what they did during the bayram (Eid al fitir)...

  • 2 weeks later...

2 Pre-war Studio Portraits

The first seems to say "??? Gregory 4 Drag) So does that mean 4th Dragoons?

The second seems to be related to the navy, but hopefully the clear shot of the shoulder strap will give some answers.
