Shell case making

I've not seen that before. It could be an early Vicker's Maxim case. Later ones were marked VSM. What is the size / calibre?

Ah. I thought we'd either be talking about brass-drawing, annealing and machining techniques, or carpentry for making wooden cases to hold quantities of shells. When I were a young fella in the 70s, many factories had a casemaker - sometimes with a couple of oppos - for the purpose... :D
