What are these Sleeve Markings?

I'd be grateful if someone could explain the left sleeve chevron/stripe in this photo. Is the vertical stripe a wound stripe? What does this chevron mean?

Thanks,

Chris.

Hi Chris,

As far as I understand it, each one of those chevrons represents 1 year active service abroard, allowing for some home leave. I'm sure someone will be able to give you the full explaination, but that I believe is general outline.

Cheers

Tim.

Hi Chris,

Yes, the vertical stripe is a wound stripe. The chevron is a 'Good Conduct' badge or stripe, overseas chevrons were much smaller and worn on the right sleeve.
