heatherannej Posted 12 November , 2014 Share Posted 12 November , 2014 Hi All. I've a family photograph and I wonder if anyone can help clarify/confirm regiments. The photo is dated 1st June 1916, Dainville - it was sent to my Granny by her relative Cameron Highlander David Grant Petrie, who stands in the kilt on the left. As I have interpreted the back, it reads "J or G Kippen, R.A.M.C. (standing) F. Gillolty R.?G.A. Right (this is probably Gellatly?) Js. Day R.C. (or is it R.E.?) (sitting) and myself. They are "Blair Boys" ... that is lads from Blairgowrie in Perthshire. Is this a good enough image to see if they description fits the men please? Just that one lad appears to look like a soldier from Blairgowrie who is in a totally different regiment. Many thanks in anticipation. Let me know if I need to get any close-ups needed. roughdiamond Posted 12 November , 2014 Share Posted 12 November , 2014 The seated man is possibly RE (Royal Engineers), the badge shape is correct, but can't bee 100% as it's blurred, standing right the man has an Artillery badge, the card reads to me RFA but could be RGA, finally standing central, can't confirm the cap badge due to angle and blurring, but the Red Cross patch on his arm means it's a distinct possibility, I'd go with the info on the card. Edited to add: -Do you believe the Artilleryman is Fraser Gellatly? 2 MIC's for him as RGA, probably one for a Star, the other for the BW and V medals. There are 2 x John Kippen RAMC, and both seem to have also served in the RE later as Cpl's. There are 15 x MIC's for James Day RE. Sam
Blackblue Posted 12 November , 2014 Share Posted 12 November , 2014 I agree with Sam. As per inscription you have a Cameron, a RAMC, a RGA and a RE:Only David Petrie in Camerons:British War Medal and Victory Medal Roll:http://search.ancestry.com.au/cgi-bin/sse.dll?rank=1&new=1&MSAV=1&gss=angs-c&gsfn=David+grant+&gsln=Petrie+&gskw=Cameron+&cpxt=1&uidh=tg7&cp=11&pcat=39&h=3497955&recoff=5+6&db=IWOServiceMedalAwardRolls&indiv=1&ml_rpos=11914/15 Star Roll:http://search.ancestry.com.au/cgi-bin/sse.dll?rank=1&new=1&MSAV=1&gss=angs-c&gsfn=David+grant+&gsln=Petrie+&gskw=Cameron+&cpxt=1&uidh=tg7&cp=11&pcat=39&h=5942355&recoff=5+6&db=IWOServiceMedalAwardRolls&indiv=1&ml_rpos=2Service Papers:http://search.ancestry.com.au/cgi-bin/sse.dll?rank=1&new=1&MSAV=1&gss=angs-c&gsfn=David+grant+&gsln=Petrie+&gskw=Cameron+&cpxt=1&uidh=tg7&cp=11&pcat=39&h=1553184&db=BritishArmyService&indiv=1&ml_rpos=3Soldiers Died Great:http://search.ancestry.com.au/cgi-bin/sse.dll?rank=1&new=1&MSAV=1&gss=angs-c&gsfn=David+grant+&gsln=Petrie+&gskw=Cameron+&cpxt=1&uidh=tg7&cp=11&pcat=39&h=366101&recoff=7+8&db=UKsoldiersGreatWar&indiv=1&ml_rpos=6Commonwealth War Graves: http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/252306/PETRIE,%20DAVID%20GRANT More to follow....RgdsTim D
Blackblue Posted 12 November , 2014 Share Posted 12 November , 2014 As Sam says 2 x men named John Kippen is RAMC numbers 1957 and 32043. 1957 was from Dundee (residence not birthplace) and a territorial. I agree its likely a J and there are no men with a G listed in RAMC. Service Papers for 1957:http://search.ancestry.com.au/cgi-bin/sse.dll?rank=1&new=1&MSAV=1&gss=angs-c&gsln=Kippen+&gskw=Medical+&cpxt=1&uidh=tg7&cp=11&pcat=39&h=1080725&db=BritishArmyService&indiv=1&ml_rpos=3Medal Index Card for 1957:http://search.ancestry.com.au/cgi-bin/sse.dll?rank=1&new=1&MSAV=1&gss=angs-c&gsfn=John&gsln=Kippen+&gskw=Medical+&cpxt=1&uidh=tg7&cp=11&pcat=39&h=3017173&recoff=9+10&db=MedalRolls&indiv=1&ml_rpos=2Medal Index Card 32043:http://search.ancestry.com.au/cgi-bin/sse.dll?rank=1&new=1&MSAV=1&gss=angs-c&gsfn=John&gsln=Kippen+&gskw=Medical+&cpxt=1&uidh=tg7&cp=11&pcat=39&h=3017174&recoff=9+10&db=MedalRolls&indiv=1&ml_rpos=3Both men were in France on 1 Jun 16 so probably a matter of ruling one out.RgdsTim D
Blackblue Posted 12 November , 2014 Share Posted 12 November , 2014 Probably also an F. Fraser Gellatly is a strong possibility. Also a territorial from Fifeshire. I also have a Gellatly in the family who married my GG Aunt. 1914/15 Star Roll: http://search.ancestry.com.au/cgi-bin/sse.dll?rank=1&new=1&MSAV=1&msT=1&gss=angs-c&gsln=gellatly&gskw=garrison&gskw_x=1&cpxt=1&uidh=tg7&cp=11&pcat=39&h=5425361&recoff=6&db=IWOServiceMedalAwardRolls&indiv=1&ml_rpos=2 British War Medal and Victory Medal Roll: http://search.ancestry.com.au/cgi-bin/sse.dll?rank=1&new=1&MSAV=1&msT=1&gss=angs-c&gsln=gellatly&gskw=garrison&gskw_x=1&cpxt=1&uidh=tg7&cp=11&pcat=39&h=5425361&recoff=6&db=IWOServiceMedalAwardRolls&indiv=1&ml_rpos=2 Rgds Tim D
heatherannej Posted 12 November , 2014 Author Share Posted 12 November , 2014 WOW Tim D ..... thank you so much .... I had some for David Grant Petrie but not all that you listed ... thank you Thanks too for the clarification on the Kippen and Gellatly named lads and the links .... that has all helped so much. I think it will help eliminate this other lad who is being likened to one in the photo. Much obliged for all your help - it's much appreciated.
