Remembered Today:

Medal records discrepancy

This enquiry is for my wife whose Grandfather was William Richard READ who served in the Royal Engineers (Inland Water Transport unit) Reg No 68080.

He enlisted in Feb 1915 and was posted to France.

The query is regarding his medal award, he was awarded the BMW & Victory medals as per his Medal card but also the Star.

On his Medal card it states 15 Star but a document in his service records shows the award for 1914 - 15 Star.

Can anyone shed any light on this, is it just an admin error. I know that a soldier needed to have served in the war during 14-15 to be awarded that star but he only served in France during the 1915 period.

I have attached both the Medal Card & his service record document.

Many thanks.

Mick

Mick,

It is the same medal - the 1914-15 Star. The clerk filling out the MIC used a bit of shorthand when making the entry.

All the best,

Gary

This is the same medal, the 1914-15 Star has been abbreviated to 15 Star.
