Remembered Today:

Malvern in the Great War 1914

Recommended Posts

I picked up the little "Malvern in the Great War 1914" book at the Malvern museum the other day, can not remember exactly what it cost but it was a bit under a fiver and is great value.

As it says on the cover "A study of a Worcestershire town in wartime Britain based on articles in local newspapers".

Contents are :-

Pre-war Malvern: July 1914

Malvern prepares for war: August 1914

Military Preparations

Belgian Refugees

Wartime Insecurities

Early Recruitment

Local Leaders

Letters From Soldiers

Soldiers Killed in Action

Hospitals and Red Cross Activities

Local Fundraising

It'll All Be Over By Christmas.

I fully accept that it is aimed at local people to give them an insight into how the war changed the small town and not at "military historians" but it has lots of colour photographs and direct copies of items, adverts and posters from the newspapers in addition to the books own text which gives it a different slant to most books of this type.

You might also find the odd little snippet of military related information with names that would not be avialable in more obvious places, such as the "Malvern Chums" Company (120 strong) of the 8th (Reserve) Battalion, Worcester Regt, played the local college team at Football and the team (which was made up of players that had previously played in local teams) was

Spillsbury - Goalkeeper

King, C.F.Walker - Backs

Dash, E.Bowen, Webb - Halfbacks

Weston, Williams, J. Houlton, Fitzsimmons, Malson - Forwards

Love that formation!, is anybody interested in these names?.

It is a good read, and what can you get for less than a fiver these days?, also as "general interest" could be bought as an early Christmas present for the other half :-)

It is compiled by the curator of the Malvern Museum, Faith Renger. If in the area call in and spend an hour looking around the museum and pick up a copy.

EDIT: MUSEUM IS NOW CLOSED UNTIL APRIL 2015

They intend to produce one publication for each year up to 1918, so you should be able to build up a nice set showing how things change during the period.

Edit: Hopefully will be avialable late April.

Sorry folks this thread really should have been under "Book review" rather than reference books.

So here is my little get out clause :-) It did not have an index so I have just gone through it and made my own index. If any of these names are of interest I can extract the information. .... hence it becomes reference.

I have put details against the military people where known, lack of rank and comment means probably a civilian.

Edit Swearing censored, this was all nicely formatted when I pasted it. Hopefully it is just about readable, I will look in slower time at adding it again and retaining the format.

Try using the 'Code' button above - it's the one labelled '<>'

Press it and a window will come up. Select Code Type = 'None' and then Paste your formatted text into the big box in that window and your formatting *should* be preserved.

It doesn't always work though ... and it also changes text colours. It's designed to embed programming code that you want to merely display without the code being executed.

MBockway, cheers for that.

Not quite 100% (looks like it did not like empty fields) but certainly good enough for people to easily see the information and shout if any hit with people they are interested in.

Mark,

there were no comments such as "Fred Smith who went to King's school",

but I will run the 82 names on the http://rememberthefallen.co.uk/Casualties/ListByMemorial/Worcester%20Kings%20School%20WW1%20Memorial against the list above and feedback any hits.

I know that there is also a Kings school window in the cathedral I do not know if the names are the same but will check them too.

Mark,

just run those 82 names on the various Kings School Memorials against my index and there are NO hits.

But I have no details of those that went to Kings School and survived.

If you were not aware of the http://rememberthefallen.co.uk/ site have a look at it as if gives a lot of information about each of these me (seclect the memorial then it has a link from each man to his details).

The windows and the other KSW memorials are well covered here: Worcester Cathedral Stained Glass Memorial Windows

Evan - many thanks for taking the time to cross-reference 82 names - not a quick job, so greatly appreciated!

Looks like the text covering these former King's boys has come from the obituaries written by Chappel, the headmaster, in The Vigornian, the school magazine, which I already have. Many thanks for the tip though - a very useful site indeed.

I have been told that although the museum is officially closed until the end of March they will be open this weekend for the Remembrance weekend (8-9 Nov) as they have a WWI exibition.

Additionally the 1914 book (32 pages in full colour) can also be ordered via the website (malvernmuseum.co.uk) at a cost of £6.00, to include £1.50 for p&p.

  • 3 years later...

Where did that time go since November 2014?!.

The museum also produced an excellent book along the same lines for 1915 which came out in 2015  (I thought I had mentioned it on the forum but if so I can not see it), and for anybody with an interest in the Malvern area I would recommend it.

I have just received the following e-mail from Faith Renger at the Malvern Museum

"The third and final booklet about Malvern in the Great War has just been published.  It covers the years 1916 to 1919 and beyond and again explores the Home Front but with sections devoted to the key battle zones, some of the men and women who took part in the campaigns and a Roll of Honour for each year.

The booklet is priced £5 and is available at Malvern Museum, but can easily be posted should you be interested."

I admit I have not seen it (but will go and get it in the next few days) but if like the earlier 2 it will be an enjoyable read giving an interesting insight into the impact the war had on the area.  Additionally this has "sections devoted to the key battle zones, some of the men and women who took part in the campaigns and a Roll of Honour for each year." which might help if researching an individual from the area.

Details of the museum can be found at https://malvernmuseum.co.uk/  and its worth looking around if you are in the area and would like to pick up a copy in person.
