The 29th October is celebrated in Turkey as Independence Day - honouring the formal creation of the Turkish Republic on this day in 1923. Quite by chance the 29th October also marks the less-well celebrated anniversary of the Ottoman Empire's entry into the GW, when Admiral Souchon and the Goeben and Breslau (now renamed the Yavuz Sultan Selim and Midilli) along with other Turkish warships, bombarded the Russian ports of Odessa, Sevastapol and Novorossiysk.
