Does anyone know if there was a specific rule relating to the time a man could earn his second stripe after obtaining the first?

Hello Anne

Are you referring to NCO's rank badges or Good Conduct badges? If the latter, I think it was three years but may have been four (two years for the first, but sources differ as to whether the second was five or six).

Thank you for your response Ron. I should have been more clear and said L/Cpl to Cpl.

Nothing was laid down. Appointment as l/cpl was effectively in the CO's gift and corporals were usually, but not always, promoted from l/cpl as the need arose. In the field, the best man to fill the vacancy would be chosen by the CO. Official confirmation would have to follow from the officer i/c records at the home HQ.

Not the official source, Ron. Pay Warrant 1913: five years for the second.
