Phil Andrews Posted 24 October , 2014 Share Posted 24 October , 2014 I was in London last week and came across this memorial. Does anyone have any info on what it's all about please? Thanks Phil A Edit to say - the plaque reads "The Great War 1914 - 1918. In this square were trained the men raised by Gray's Inn and Holborn for service in the 6th Batt Volunteer Regiment under command of Lieut. Col. Sydney Ashley VD." Phil Andrews Posted 27 October , 2014 Author Share Posted 27 October , 2014 I honestly dunno. I can't understand why the plaque would be so vague/inaccurate and can't find any ref to Lt-Col Ashley. I'm stumped.
rolt968 Posted 27 October , 2014 Share Posted 27 October , 2014 Wasn't this one of the London Battalions of what eventually became the Volunteer Training Corps? R.
MBrockway Posted 27 October , 2014 Share Posted 27 October , 2014 We're here in the esoteric world of the Volunteer Force, in this case the London Volunteer Regiment of the Volunteer Training Corps. This was divided into several 'Groups' and then, I presume, into battalions. I am uncertain, which Group this 6th Battalion belonged to, but Ashley is listed in the London Gazette under 6th Bn., County of London Volunteer Regt., not City of London Volunteer Regt., despite the memorial being in Grays Inn. HTH and wiser Pals than I can probably add more. Mark
rolt968 Posted 27 October , 2014 Share Posted 27 October , 2014 I wonder how old Lt. Col. /Major Ashley was since he had a VD and was not a TF officer. R.

bill wright Posted 29 November , 2018 Share Posted 29 November , 2018 I just added this memorial to War Memorials Online https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/261216 I had a fruitless visit the other day in the early evening gloom and couldn't see the plaque - can anyone give more detailed location? MBrockway Posted 29 November , 2018 Share Posted 29 November , 2018 The plaque is in the SW corner of Gray's Inn Square immediately to the right of the foot passageway leading to Field Court. It is fixed about 2-3 m above the pavement. OS Grid Ref: TQ 31016 81732 Google StreetView here HTH Mark
