Remembered Today:

Diaries for Northumberland Fusiliers or West Yorkshire Regiment

Before I try the national archives, I was wondering if anyone had access to the unit war diaries for the 1/5 Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers or the 9th Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment. In particular, I am looking for specific information on two individuals and was curious to see if they are mentioned.

The first is Frederick G. Eddison (69117), who was taken as a prisoner of war on May 27, 1918 while serving with the 1/5th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers. The other is for James W. Cutts (18990), who was killed in action on September 27, 1916 while with the 9th Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment.

Thank you in advance.

Hello,

sorry for not getting in touch sooner, I haven't been on in a while and have only just spotted your post. I don't have access to the war diaries but I do have some other West Yorkshire Regiment related books I can have a look in for you. Do you have access to ancestry? there is a little information on there about James William Cuts, just his SDGW (Soldiers Died in the Great War) entry and his MIC (Medal Index Card), which shows his medal entitlement and the theatre of war he first entered. There is only the MIC for Frederick G Eddison though and that only has his medal entitlement on it.

If you want I could send you copies of these in an e-mail if you haven't already seen them. You may have all this information though. Will have a look through my stuff and see what I can find out for you.

Hello again, I've just had another thought, do you know if James William Cutts was commemorated on a war memorial in Leeds at all, I live not that far from the City and could go get some photo's for you if you knew where it was

Hi Rich.

I have their MIC's from Ancestry; I'm not sure what the SDGW entry looks like. I was just thinking today about trying to see if he is listed on a war memorial in Leeds. I found this website http://www.leedsww1memorials.com/ and I'll be going through that to see if I can find him.

I'm also waiting for approval to join the British Medals forum. I want to put a call out on the long-shot chance that his medals could be found if they are out there on the market.
