Exaltabit Posted 19 October , 2014 Share Posted 19 October , 2014 My grandfather, Captain Lawder Benjamin Sandys Smith won the MC in 1916 and I have managed to find out just about every detail and will walk the ground with my daughters on the 100th anniversary; would the initial recommendation exist and if so how do I research it? Also he is recorded in the Army List as MID but I cannot find the reference in the London Gazette; do records for this exist please? All help great fully received. Coldstreamer Posted 19 October , 2014 Share Posted 19 October , 2014 you can also search the national archives medals index cards for MIDs - that will give the gazette date

Exaltabit Posted 19 October , 2014 Author Share Posted 19 October , 2014 Thanks for both comments. His medal index card doesn't mention his MC either so clearly these are not 100% accurate. I only came across the mention of his MID yesterday when I was at Kew, the army list for 1918 'war services of officers 1914-17' sates 'despatches, Lond. Gaz. 20 Nov 16.' but there wasn't an edition for this date. Ben
