Remembered Today:

Bottom Wood Cemetery - Mametz - Bunny Wood

Does anyone know the exact location of Bottom Wood Cemetery?

The 104 graves here were moved to Dantzig Alley in 1919.

Based on the CWGC exhumation record of Gunner L/173 JW Broadhurst, I had thought it to be at Bunny Wood map ref. 62D.F.5.a.4.6. but this location does not fit exactly, in my mind, to the description given on the CWGC website as that ref is north of a line of trees known as Bunny Wood and not exactly between the two woods mentioned.

CWGC quote: "BOTTOM WOOD CEMETERY, FRICOURT, on the south edge of a small wood between Mametz and Fricourt Woods. This was a field ambulance station for some months from July 1916, and the cemetery contained 104 graves."

Gunner JW Broadhurst was killed on 22 July while his battery were in Mametz Bottom Wood. He was the first KIA that the battery suffered and my GGF attended the burial which took place at 6pm that evening.

What I would like to know is the relationship between 62D.F.5.a.4.6. and the temporary cemetery in question. It is of course possible that these are two separate locations.

Regards

Alan.

Thanks Jon,

Clearly different locations.

There does seem to be another large

concentration at ref X 29.a.2.3.
