My great uncle is in this photo. During the summer of 1918 after this unit had become part of Garde-Minenwerfer-Kompanie Nr. 8. The writing on the shell on the left reads "Minen-Werfer / Ers.Btl." - the rest I can't make out. The date on the shell on the right in 1916. Unfortunately, I only have a laser scan of the original.

Okay, now it makes sense. Not sure why I didn't find this earlier. My great uncle is standing back row on the very left.

The PB1 on the shell stands for Pionierbataillon 1, which was probably connected to the MW unit somehow.

It provided the Ersatz for lMWZ 953.

Yes, however unfortunately the regimental history for that unit is not very detailed. As far as I can find, this is the only reference to LMWZ 953:
