pete-c Posted 1 October , 2014 Share Posted 1 October , 2014 Film shot around Salonika circa 1916. Footage of French? ground-crew loading bombs into what I think could be a Caudron 'R'? The best part for a seaplane nut like myself are the details of a Short Type 166, serial '161' having its engine 'pulled through' and then being craned from the water on to the deck of HMS Ark Royal in Salonika harbour. Also a couple of shots of a small French? flying boat - Donnet? - and finally a Farman F40. Enjoy. centurion Posted 1 October , 2014 Share Posted 1 October , 2014 I think the aircraft being bombed up may be a Short 830 effectively an 827 but engined with a Canton Unné water cooled radial
centurion Posted 1 October , 2014 Share Posted 1 October , 2014 The flying boat does appear to be a Donnet-Dehault DD2 also engined with a Canton Unné
pete-c Posted 1 October , 2014 Author Share Posted 1 October , 2014 No, not a Short 830. Yes they did have a Samson Canton-Unne engine but they also had Shorts iconic top mounted 'Box' radiator, not the side mounted ones shown. I can't find a photo of a Caudron 'R' in any of my books but I did however find a couple of grainy photos on a website that match the machine in the film. It would seem that the 'R' was a short lived type. The bombs themselves don't appear to be a British type, and just where is the fitter putting them! It is only the head-gear of the sailors that lead me to the conclusion that they are French. I have never seen a British matelot wearing a beret with a bobble on top! centurion Posted 1 October , 2014 Share Posted 1 October , 2014 And I've found a grainy shot of a Canton Unne engined 830 with side radiators . The French were not big on building float planes so perhaps they bought or borrwed some British ones?
centurion Posted 1 October , 2014 Share Posted 1 October , 2014 As far as I can see the only hydroplanes that Caudron built in the period were the Caudron K and some G variants. All with twin booms and nacelles. Even Flight has a no record Caudron Rs were twin engined escort fighters and bombers !
