Jonathan Saunders Posted 2 May , 2003 Share Posted 2 May , 2003 If I have understood yr question correctly then I can tell you that I have come across fatalities who were known to be buried in a certain cemetery in India but the location of their grave has since been lost and there names have been added to memorial panels accordingly. Terry Denham Posted 2 May , 2003 Share Posted 2 May , 2003 Signals is correct. Many WW1 graves in India have been deemed to be unmaintainable for a variety of reasons - political and geographical. Therefore all names of affected casualties are inscribed on a CWGC memorial and this is their official place of commemoration for all statistical purposes. It is known as an 'Alternative Commemoration'. However, CWGC also maintain a record of their original burial location and this is usually given in their entry on the CWGC website.
