Remembered Today:

Middleton's Brave Sons

On 3rd May 1919, the Middleton Guardian newspaper published a book, listing those from Middleton, North Manchester who had fallen in the war. At the time of publication the book was made available from the local office of the newspaper, so would not have seen a wide audience outside the area.

The book contains biographies of nearly 500 men from the town taken partly from published obituaries and partly from information from the families after the paper appealed for further information once the war was over.

95 years later the extremely rare book has finally seen a facsimile reprint.

For anyone with connections in Middleton, this is a must have, (and a great companion to 1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=198177) but it also contains a lot of "social history" details such as pre war employment, sports club and religious affiliations that could not be sourced elsewhere, even the reproduced advertisements at the back give an insight into post war life.

Many books on local memorials will be published during the centenary but I think the first hand info in this reprint will be difficult to beat.
