Remembered Today:

Unusually Named People of the Great War

Wouldn't it be great (little bit of devilment here, so apologies) to see an unusual & multi-barreled name who was only a private. Then try & imagine the grief he probably got from some gruff, don't stand on ceremony, Sgt. Major

Guy Robert Hurst Maitland-Addison was a serving officer in the Royal Marines when war broke out, he was discharged for 'unsatisfactory conduct' on 27/3/15. Obtained a commission into the 17th Bn Lancs.Fus. on 6/8/15, but was again discharged from the service through the signing of 'rubber cheques'. He enlisted again and served as 63191 Cpl Guy Addison, MGC, and was killed in action 11/9/17.

An interesting career in the services!

Does anyone know why V.C. winner Allastair Malcolm Cluny McReady-Diarmid changed his name to that from plain Arthur Malcolm Drew? It sounds more impressive, but why did he choose that particular name?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allastair_McReady-Diarmid

He apparently took his wife's name as his family disapproved the marriage.

Leading Seaman R [ Reginald] SOLE.

That reminds me of one of the men recorded on the Memorial Plaque to the WW1 conscientious objectors who died.

He is listed as Harry Haston - nothing remarkable about that.

However, the name of the family was originally Harston - nothing remarkable about that, until one asks why the change.

The answer: "Because we lived in an area where H's are frequently dropped, and Harston without an H was embarrassing".

Several men named Sergeant from Easthampstead, Berkshire were killed during the war.

Two were Second Lieutenants, two were Privates, one a Rifleman, and the other a Bombardier. Not a Sergeant Sergeant among them. :-(

I was interested in researching this man and, although he is clearly named on UK, SDGW 1914-19, he was not registered as such at birth and the closest that I can find is "Robert Lord Perry", b. 1899 in Bury, Lancs.

He is therefore withdrawn from this thread.

James Henry Maitland Makgill Crichton

That is certainly a blast from the past, a name not easily forgotten.

He was still around in the late 1950s, eccentrically commanding JSSL Crail, Fife.

I knew of one Maitland Makgill Crichton serving in the Army in the past 10 years. You might (or might not) be surprised to learn he was Scottish
