timsanders Posted 22 August , 2014 Share Posted 22 August , 2014 Remembering the men of 1st Northumberland Fusiliers preparing street barricades near Mariette on the afternoon of 22nd August 1914. It's a well used photo but I keep coming back to it as it show's a method defence and indeed warfare that was to become obsolete just weeks later. timsanders Posted 22 August , 2014 Author Share Posted 22 August , 2014 Great blog Ian, I suspect there is little evidence of the action there now.
ianjonesncl Posted 22 August , 2014 Share Posted 22 August , 2014 Tim On arriving at the location I must admit one was quite disorientated. The drainage channel alongside the canal is now elevated, which can be seen in the second photograph, a concrete monstrosity running left to right. The footbridge that can be seen in the photograph does go over the canal, however it's prime purpose is to go across the E7 motorway. I suspect the building of the motorway destroyed the building shown on the map where the girls crossed the road. Ian
Loader Posted 22 August , 2014 Share Posted 22 August , 2014 Sure wish we knew the names of the men in the photo & what happened to them eventually. Good picture.
