Just opened the India section of the forum and thought that this book may interest some of you which I read a year or so ago as I had a relative involved!

Afghan Wars and the north west Frontier 1839-1947 by Michael Barthorp pub Cassell & Co my edition 2002.

An interesting read.

Ive just used this link today to download & read this diary. 5 days ago I had no idea that my maternal grandfather was involved in this war. Thanks to posts from forum members, including yourself, Ive gained so much knowledge about him. Thank you so much.

That quote appears to be a re-wording of the work of the German philosopher Georg Wilhelm Frederick Hegel “The only thing we learn from history is that we learn nothing from history.” (Lectures on the Philosophy of History 1832).

I wonder who turned it around in order to have a dig at the Brits?

I don’t know, but I don’t think it’s particularly unfair at the moment.
