Remembered Today:

Royal British Legion Poppy Campaign – North Weald Airfield

The Centenary Poppy Campaign originated as an idea in the Greenhithe and Swanscombe Branch of the Royal British Legion. The aim is to cover the UK with poppies during the centenary period in commemoration of all those who lost their lives in the First World War.

At North Weald Airfield we have created a circular poppy field opposite the Gate Guardian as our contribution to this important anniversary. Our colleagues from Grounds Maintenance prepared the ground and sowed the seeds at the end of May. We have been watering the area regularly to help the poppies grow. They are now flowering well and were out in time for today's anniversary.

North Weald opened as a Royal Flying Corps airfield in 1916, with one flight of 39 Squadron’s BE2c night fighters based here to help defend London against Zeppelin attacks. Lieutenant Wulstan Tempest shot down the Zeppelin flagship L31, commanded by Kapitänleutnant Heinrich Mathy over Potters Bar in October 1916.

It would be great to see who else is planting poppies too….

Now that IS a worthy tribute.

Perhaps Mods might find a sub forum for other Poppy (in the good sense) growers to add photos of their efforts - or have thread title amended to "RBL Poppy Campaign - Post your photos here"??
