These interviews rescued from an old VHS video, the quality not great, but English translations on screen.

…. They had conquered a notorious hill. They had lived in trenches that had been alternately French and German. These trenches sometimes lay filled with bodies in different stages of decomposition. They were once men in the prime of their lives, but had fallen for the possession of this hill. This hill, that was partly built on dead bodies already. A battle after which they lay rotting, fraternally united in death….

Splendid find, Mike. Great interviews, especially Ernst Weckerling. His story of the missing Pickelhaube spikes is brilliant. His unit was wearing leather Pickelhauben with a cover and they had all removed the spikes, which were gathered up in sacks and at some stage were lost. The Kaiser than paid a visit to their sector and they were told to clean up their uniforms and replace their helmet spikes. So men stuck large potatoes and bits of wood on top of their helmets underneath the cover and paraded in front of the unsuspecting Kaiser ...
