jhm736iii Posted 23 October , 2004 Share Posted 23 October , 2004 Does anyone have information on american squadrons attached to the independent air force? My grandfather was in the 835th Squadron (repair) and i believe it was assigned to the IAF.
Dolphin Posted 23 October , 2004 Share Posted 23 October , 2004 I'm happy to be corrected, but I don't think any USAS units served with the Indepedent Force, RAF, before the Armistice. Many US airmen did serve in IF squadrons, in both day and night bomber squadrons. Some of these men stayed with the IF until the end of hostilities, while others went back to US units after gaining experience. There was certainly a plan for USAS squadrons, especially night-bombing units using US-built Handley-Page O/400 aircraft, to work alongside the IF in 1919. However it was clear that the Americans were to remain under AEF command. Perhaps your grandfather's squadron was one of the units destined for co-operation with the IF in 1919. A book that partly covers the subject is Hostile Skies by J J Hudson ISBN 0 8156 0465 3. Gareth
