I am looking for any information about Surgeon Geoffrey L. Attwater in The Royal Navy. I believe that he was a lieutenant and enlisted 1916.

I have this officers sword and would appreciate any information about him.

Not a name I recognise but he may have kept his head down ;) there is nothing for him in the online index of the Journal of the Royal Naval Medical Service http://www.jrnms.com. I'm not at work but this is what the net can tell me:

June 1916 Navy List via http://archive.org has Geoffrey Lewis Attwater signing on as Temp[orar]y Surgeon Lieutenant on 18 Jan 1916.

Google shows: 1. some references to him still in the mob in 1918 and 1920; 2. an entry of the 1911 census which has him with a birth year of 1890, living in Lambeth and born in Streatham; 3. an entry in the London Gazette (possibly), if he is the same person as this Medical Practitioner in 1942 https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/35552/page/2058/data.pdf

I can't find a record for him in the National Archives but if I have time tomorrow I will try to find our copy of R.S. Allison's The Surgeon Probationers (Belfast: Blackstaff Press, 1979) and look him up (I have a nasty feeling someone has "re-shelved" it). Another option is the Service News section of the JRNMS but it is small print densely populated, so will take some time.

Tomorrow is my last day at work for a week; if I'm too busy clearing my desk to find that, I can only apologise in advance!

I have found him in a couple of Navy Lists. He was listed against the cruiser Chatham in the November 1917 List & had been there since 18/5/16.

The December 1918 List gives him as being with the battleship Albion from 24/7/18. By then Albion was being used as an accommodation ship.

Just wondering if this should be moved from Soldiers to Ships and Navies, although the latter does not include Sailors in its heading....

There is a confidential all day meeting in the library *grrr* so I can't reach Allison, sorry. It'll have to wait till I come back on the 11th.

Thanks again for the information - maybe someone out there has a Picture of Mr Attwater?

I also look forward to see what "seaJane" could find.
