The 1908 T.F. regulations 'War Establishment' allowed that the permanent staff member who is acting RSM will be left behind at the depot on mobilisation.

Does anyone know if this changed between 1908 and 1914 ?

The reason I'm puzzling is that the acting RSM of the 6th DLI (C.S.M. George Perry) proceeded overseas with the battalion on 19 April 1915 so I'm curious to know if there was a change.

No such thing as RSM pre-1915 - he was the 'Sergeant Major'.

T.F. Reg's 1912(amended to 1st December 1914) - Para 197 - Acting Sgt Majors of the Permanent Staff of the following units will remain in their appointments after mobilization;-

Yeomanry Regiments

Field Artillery Brigades

Mountain Artillery Brigades

Infantry & Cyclist Bn's

Divisional Supply & Transport Columns

Mounted Bde Field Ambulances

Field Ambulances

Thanks Graham.

Do the notes on the bottom of the wartime establishment table in the 1912 edition state whether he would remain at the depot on mobilisation ?.

1912 does not have the "Establishments" in it, but the 1910 does and it clearly states;- (h) that one Sgt Instructor will be left at the Depot on mobilization. No mention of the Sgt Major being left behind and it repeats Para 197, word for word.

Interesting one this.

I show 2x Sgt.Inst's at the depot through August. 1x in September (the other being posted back to the first line) and at the end of September he was replaced by one if the older Col.Sgts apparently for the duration. The Sgt.Maj remained with the unit moving to the Reserve Bn when the first line embarked.

Would i be right in thinking that the majority of the Sgt.Inst were posted back to their regiments in September ? Trying to work out why a number of the Sgt.Inst's im looking at stayed with the first line when it went overseas.

Regards

Dave
