Naval actions on Lake Tanganyika

When the British gunboat flotilla on Lake Tanganyika captured the German gunboat 'Kingani' it was described (in The Phantom Flotilla') as being the first instance of a German warship being captured by a British one.

When the flotilla sank the German gunboat 'Hedwig von Wissmann' a few days later and recovered a German naval ensign, it was described as the first ever captured.

Are these statements correct?

Probably not, it depends on what is considered a warship. The Royal Navy captured German 'gunboats' in the German West African colony of Kammerun in September 1915. They may well have had Ensigns on board.

It was September 1914.
