Guest raasay Posted 26 July , 2014 Share Posted 26 July , 2014 When the British gunboat flotilla on Lake Tanganyika captured the German gunboat 'Kingani' it was described (in The Phantom Flotilla') as being the first instance of a German warship being captured by a British one. When the flotilla sank the German gunboat 'Hedwig von Wissmann' a few days later and recovered a German naval ensign, it was described as the first ever captured. Are these statements correct? Darlaston Remembered Posted 28 July , 2014 Share Posted 28 July , 2014 Probably not, it depends on what is considered a warship. The Royal Navy captured German 'gunboats' in the German West African colony of Kammerun in September 1915. They may well have had Ensigns on board.
