Great War Forum in the paper

It's only the Daily Mail but I noticed the mention of the GWF today (feel like I need some help now for confessing this).

A mystery portrait of an unknown First World War soldier has finally been identified - 100 years after his death.

For years the painting of the unknown soldier hung in Carmarthen County Museum in Wales but no one knew his name or if he survived the horror of the trenches.

It remained a mystery until an amateur historian posted a picture of the painting on the Great War Forum website and asked for help to uncover his identity.

Martin G in the Daily Fail! Well I never.

(Could this be moved to the main Forum?)

For all the trendy criticism of the Mail, the support of Rothermere for the Chalke Valley History Festival has been commendable.

It has gone from nowhere to biggest in three years.

And it takes place in a beautiful location.

I'm surprised the Times didn't take this one up! Well done to those involved.

Confession: I also saw this and much earlier than Craig but didn't want to be the first to admit to such unseemly behaviour as reading the DM - which I do purely to keep up with what the opposition thinks and believes (and we are not talking about the other KUK here)!

On the other hand - being a fair-minded chap, and so ignoring where it was reported - well done on a wonderful piece of research!

It was a Wales based journalist interested in the Carmarthen link who syndicated the story. It has appeared in various mangled forms in a number of papers. Despite my very best efforts to emphasise the GWF, WIT and (named) individuals who were part of the discovery, some has been edited out. I did not speak to the Daily Wail, they merely picked up the syndicated story. MG

Personally I enjoy reading the Daily Mail as i often find it contains many interesting articles on the Great War , the continual sniping at it by some on this forum is starting

to grate a little, as i thought we were suppose to be non-political ?

Indeed BlackMaria, and Norman Seadog makes sure we all know when the DM has a WW1 article. I think it is the rest of the content (and not necessarily its politics) that riles many. Anyway, well done Martin on getting a bit of good publicity for the forum

Indeed it does have many good bits on the GW! As for continued sniping, well, I am a Gruniard reader and I can assure you I get more snipes my way for that than are ever directed at the DM... I developed a thicker skin as to those who snipe at my reading matter (as does Mr. B on his, and those of his fellow train travellers that apparently read something called the metro which I always thought was a form of chocolate bar...). And of course we are all non-political! Just a matter of horses for courses...

If you filter out the rubbish I do agree that they are good for the WW1 stuff (and WW2).

The father in law uses that argument as well. Equally unsuccessfully. LOL

That reminds me of my Dad. We used to get the Tottygraph (ostensibly for me to read the archaeology reports); the Manchester Girniard (for serious news); the Mirror (for what the ordinary man thinks); and on Sundays the Observer (no STottygraph those days!) and News of the Screws World for news of what the vicar did before excuses were made and the reporter left... I used to laugh at those adverts in the bottom right hand corner of the NoW about pensions, but now I am an OAP...

BUT, back on topic! Yes, up to now I think the Gurniard and DM have been doing a good job re: ww1. I refuse to subscribe to Murdoch, and do look sometimes at the DT and Indie, but I have been consistently impressed by the way that the Gurniard and DM have kept the GW as a 'live' topic'

I think a very big Well Done and Thank You is also due to the journalist who actually noticed that there was a story to start with.
