Lewisroberts Posted 26 July , 2014 Share Posted 26 July , 2014 Hi, Is anyone able to pin point the exact location of the trenches occupied by the ESR in April 1915 during the first phase of the 2nd battles of Ypres? Thank you in advance. Best regards, Lewis
Langdon Posted 26 July , 2014 Share Posted 26 July , 2014 Hi Lewis, I haven't got the answer to hand (and an expert on the East Surrey's may well have) but meanwhile you could access the War Diaries of the 2nd Bn at the National Archives here. Downloadable for £3.30 or free at Kew. I discovered a particular trench name in an officer's diary (written up later) rather than the battalion one but you may be in luck. Edward1 here at the forum has helped locate particular trenches on trench maps (and superimposing them on present day maps) so may be able to help - but may need the trench names first. BFBSM Posted 26 July , 2014 Share Posted 26 July , 2014 Lewis, The Battalion War diaries, in transcript form, are available here for gratis: http://www.queensroyalsurreys.org.uk/war_diaries/local/2Bn_East_Surrey.shtml. Mark
Langdon Posted 26 July , 2014 Share Posted 26 July , 2014 Thanks Mark, good to know this - I'm getting the impression that more and more War Diaries are becoming available gratis - West Sussex I know about. Perhaps I should post a request to know how many diaries the GWF know are now gratis.. Regards, Mike
