Looked a bit fierce in the West Point photo rather more jovial in latter pictures. Given what he was partly responsible for perhaps jovial is not the right word

Looks a bit like William Bragg Nobel Laureate and father of Lawrence Bragg who was joint winner of the prize.

This introductory sentence:

“Spoiled for choice for boffins and profs here, but the egghead I’d like identified is the moustached chap sat third from left”

contains an excellent clue.

He graduated in November

Yes, I should have written, “He graduated early, in 1918”, and not, “He graduated early in 1918”. He was of the class of 1920, but the wartime need for officers sped things along. Apologies.

No. He did, however, have something to do with the development of radar.

Well I was uttery convinced it was Mills...but having just got back fron a local tavern and after three pinds of Ilkley Brewery's 'Old Head Scrambler' I could probably convince myself of anything

So can we rule out Richard Hand. Inventor of the eponymous grenade too?

Sometimes intentionally. What I'm intrigued by is Mr IR looking for Sir R. Hand if he is still under the influence of the demon local brew, although Mr Knott sounds like he could do with a bit of it too.

:D:D I think we all could.

P.s. You are a comedic genius. Have you ever considered a career in the church?

(Perhaps a bridge too far)

Only if I can be the baby eating bishop of Bath and Wells. I mentioned that you were on top form to my responsible grown up and she said to pass on her best wishes for the season to Mr Plumb. So I have. And seasonal greetings from Owls Towers to all the inmates of WiT? God bless us, every one.
