No -  he was appointed to the submarine service as a Sub-Lieutenant. Apparently his father was a Baron of the Russian Empire.

I got it! The Baron solved it all, the submarine was E22!
That makes this bloke Reginald Thomas Dimsdale

Yes! Wiki: “E22 was involved in experiments in the North Sea to intercept Zeppelins on 24 April 1916. E22 carried two Sopwith Schneider seaplane scouts on her casing. The boat would then submerge in calm waters and the planes would float on the surface. They would then take off and then return to the East coast of England at Felixstowe. The trials were not repeated.”

E22 was torpedoed on 25 April 1916, taking 31 of the crew of 33 to the bottom. The two surviving members were taken prisoner  by the U-Boat and became POWs.

One of those killed was John Cleve Hoskin. His widow Margaret married my Great Uncle William Ross in 1917.

Correct! Good show Knotty! I do again apologize for my mistakes along the way.

To veer away from Australians, here's one I got straight out of a book [Over the Battlefronts]

Hint: Later Colonel, had a few foreign gongs.

So can we assume he was one of the American aviators flying for the French, as part of the Lafayette Flying Corps

Sorry a bit easy for me as I’m helping proof reading a book on WW1 nurses, that being written by an retired nurse and current CWGC area coordinator. Being a “W” I had to flick through a number of pages.

Yes, too much information Mr. 888.

A Google search for British nurse born Yorkshire 1880 brought her up straight away. I wasn't as fast on the draw as friend Knotty though. Well played John.😊

Yeah.... I shouldn't have said much more.... Well, this is the last one I'll do for awhile (mainly since I want to see other peoples)

Did not the US Navy have a star in place of the Executive Curl?

Mine isn't American, though he is well known over there and here in the UK. Not necessarily for his Great War role though.

My bad, uniform reminded me of Union Navy Officers

Is he Max Haller? He served in U-Boats in the Imperial German Navy, was awarded the Gallipoli Star, emigrated to Palestine in the 30s, was decorated by President Hindenburg and served with the Israeli War Fleet?
