Where does the Royal Navy get these names from?

You're making it too easy... just go to "Battle of Dover Strait (1916) on Wikipedia ... HMS Flirt ... another funny name!

I confess to googling "tank types" so maybe I'll let someone else have a crack at it.

Please do. I couldn't possibly have such a post associated with me personally 😂

Thanks to Jane I see that this is a Whippet.

I was disappointed that HMS Birch proved to be a trawler of a later war.

She has a distinct look of a Bloomsbury Groupie about her.

That's Margery Fry, painted by brother Roger.  But I'm afraid I only know that because when I hovered my mouse over the picture, the file name came up ...

Re 'Flirt' and 'Frisky', there was also a WW1 Arabis class sloop called HMS Pansy.  The name 'Pansy' was proposed again for a Flower class sloop in 1939, but she was renamed 'Heartsease' before she was launched and commissioned in 1940.

There was also the motorboat, USS Ponce:

With the Americans mostly naming their big aircraft carriers after presidents... imagine there will be one day the USS Donald ...

Surely it will be USS The Donald😁, as he is affectionately known by the press.

Whoops. I usually remember to rename my downloads! A member of the famous Quaker family, like Elizabeth involved in prison reform. An alumna of my own college, later its librarian and Principal. After 1915 she joined Quaker relief efforts in the Marne area and then in other parts of France.

On target, Ron. Artist brother Roger was a Bloomsbury; Virginia Woolf wrote his biography. Margery, Roger, and Virginia and Leonard Woolf went on holiday to Greece together in 1932.

I don’t think we’ve featured this young woman yet. Who was she, and for what was she honoured by Black Jack ? ? ?

I know this one, Uncle and was about to present her myself.

Small world, but I wouldn't want to paint it 😊
