Fattyowls Posted 7 March , 2019 Share Posted 7 March , 2019 Was there a sub-theme which included the uniformed ladies of the house of Hohenzollern prior to the Dowding and spiritualism thing? I surprised myself by remembering the link, as he is bit of a hero of mine. Sholto Douglas and Leigh-Mallory are not my cup of tea by contrast. I'll endeavour to keep up. Pete. P.S. On the subject of the uniformed ladies of the Teutonic blood royal I suspect that if they were around today they could make a very good living applying strict discipline and severe correction to naughty City bankers dressed like that...... seaJane Posted 7 March , 2019 Share Posted 7 March , 2019 A bit of searching leads me to wonder whether that would be Gertrude Stein and Alice B Toklas, although I'm not 100% convinced.

Yes! Alice Toklas had a fine moustache, apparently: https://www.brainpickings.org/2013/04/30/alice-b-toklas-meets-gertrude-stein/ and the two were thought to have had a sadomasochistic relationship: https://www.nytimes.com/2007/09/23/books/review/Roiphe-t.html During the First war they bought their own van and served as ambulance drivers: https://www.biography.com/people/gertrude-stein-9493261 Image from here: http://womenineuropeanhistory.org/index.php?title=Gertrude_Stein

Uncle George Posted 8 March , 2019 Share Posted 8 March , 2019 (edited) Here’s a gunboat, laid down in Devonport in 1889 and converted to a minesweeper in 1909, in which role served throughout the First war. Someone somewhere had a sense of humour There must be some history... Our F930, formerly the third HNLMS Karel Doorman (My Granddad served on the second).... is called the Leopold I, after our first King. My godson is also named Leopold, so of course I got him a cap from the ship. His mom had to report to me that in school, he then started to boast that "The Belgian Navy has a ship called like ME!" ... M.
