von Hoeppner?

You have him. Well played Uncle George. Commander General of the air service.

Hoeppner reorganized the fragmented air services, greatly increasing the number of Jastas (squadrons) and forming them into Jagdgeschwader (wings).Priority was given to the development of strategies for massed air attacks.

A not too difficult one to get us going again.

Very brave and selfless man.

I don't know who he is, but his eyes are very striking

Not exactly the 1,000 yard stare, but something close?

An exceptional case; his Great War role meant that he saw more than his fair share of carnage. Served in Egypt, Gallipoli, and the Western Front. Died tragically in England.

Did he take his own life after a court case where his wife saught certain 'rights'?

EDIT: forget the above as I have obviously confused the case.

He's not the man I was thinking of, who was RND and therefore no moustache.

No you're off track there.

A cryptic clue:

His name and nickname may entreat one to think of an old stout fellow.

On reflection, although he was most highly decorated, I can find no mention of a Military Cross.

I thought the medal ribbon was for the MC - if not, what is it?

I'm afraid that I'm not expert enough to say, but after looking again, I don't think that he was awarded a Military Cross. I can say though that he was the most highly decorated medic from his particular country.

"His particular country" and service in Gallipoli, Egypt and France suggests that he was from either Australia or New Zealand?

Got him!

Colonel Charles Mackie Begg, senior administrative medical officer with the NZEF, who was decorated with the CB, CMG and the French Croix de Guerre. He contracted influenza, then pneumonia, in England at the end of 1918.
