Generals all, here. First war Division, Corps, Army commanders. Who are they ? ? ?

And what is their other connection?

Plumer sitting second from the left with Harrington over his left shoulder? Left and right from the onlooker's viewpoint.

Plumer, yes. Otherwise, no.

Time to close this one, I think. (Images are in the public domain.)

I was struggling to identify any of them as it wasn't a very clear image to be honest U.G. Apart from the unmistakable Plumer, the only one I was fairly sure of was Monash, but he wasn't on there 🤓 To be fair, now that I know who they are I can recognise Rawlinson and Byng quite clearly, but I have to admit that I don't think I would have got anyone else.

What was their other connection by the way?

Yes, sorry about the rubbish photo. I thought Cavan was identifiable (attached image from Wikipedia). But an ill-conceived WiT!

Do you need clues?

At first glance I thought Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck, but not so.

Yes please, a clue might help.

Nothing ill conceived about it imho. A good puzzle as regards the Eton connection, just a bit of a shame about the quality of the photo.

It's not an early picture of Kitchener is it?

No, not KoK. Nor Monash.  I think the mythology of images really has come into play here. I am very surprised that it was not immediately obvious who it was, hence real clues would be unnecessary.

The picture shows our man in the "right" uniform for a British Lieutenant-Colonel

Plumer?

Bingo!!    Taken from "With Plumer in Matabeleland".  -the 1895/1896  Matabele Rebellion/ Native response to British imperial invasion (Don't want to be tasered by the Ultra PC lobby).  Our image of him is of the avuncular general of the Great War- but the pic. of him suggests he was a ferocious little so-and-so. A reminder  that British generals of the Great War had earlier careers and that some had been picked out as stars long before 1914-  Baden Powell, Allenby, Plumer- all distinguished service in Africa.

But Plumer of the kindly uncle image is the one that has endured.

With a ten gallon hat like that, surely an American.

An American, yes. Wearing the Doughboys’ campaign hat.

This chap took his good looks into the movies.
