It took a time but I found him General Denis Auguste Duchene, directly dismissed by Clemenceau, one could say for insubordination, but never said direct. He had made an “enemy” of Petain during the 1918 German Spring offensive. In command of the French 6th Army and  British Divisions, he had been asked by Petain to employ an elastic defensive position which he failed to do, subsequently the British under his command tried without success to persuade him but were dismissed with “J’ai dit” ....I have spoken.

The German barrage and attack led to the French/British line being broken on May 26th and they advanced some 20 kilometres in a day.

He was relieved of his post on June 9th.

Yes that's him. Quotes from Spears' 'Prelude to Victory'.

Doesn't he look like Prince William; is there a Spencer connection here John?

I hadn’t noticed that till you pointed it out Pete.

I don’t believe there is any relation to the Spencer’s, but I will check when I’m back home  to make doubly sure.

Don't worry too much John I'm sure it's just a figment of my imagination, and the way the mind tries to recognise faces by choosing the nearest one in the memory, even when on closer inspection it's not familiar at all. So that's me done for this one I fear.......

Checked it out Pete, there is no Spencer family connection.

Clue, he is mentioned in “Bloody Red Tabs”

Reading between the lines, and no doubt way off the mark as usual, is it Brig' Gen' Ray T Maddocks?

Cheers John. Didn't get the referal I was hoping for, but possibly another chance in the next six months or so. Meanwhile they're upping my treatment.

More clues, he was born May 1859, received his first commission in December 1878, served in the Second Boer War.

I don't know, but I'm not going to be tickling it behind the ears any time soon. Given the locational clue a ship's dog perchance, famous enough to have it's photo on display?

Pete.

Not most known for the ship, but a good start. :)

No, it isn't - not so high-ranking an owner, though famous.

Would it be the French messenger dog from Verdun called Satan? The one which carried pigeons in baskets.

Any attempt to decipher that cryptic clue will either have me barking up the wrong tree, or send me barking mad.🤓

(He's not from Barking is he?)

Never could quite understand the French and their ways.

Why not just let the pigeons make their own way? Crazy Frenchies.

Plus; they have a different word for everything, you know!

Given my interests, no, the two are poles apart. Mine is definitely a naval dog.

I did find another called Igloo, but the head looks more white than on your photo. Plus he belonged to an Admiral, so that rules him out.

The search continues.......
