Pt. Frank Docherty and 2nd Lt. Malcolm Fraser

Recommended Posts

Remembering today two Everton players among nearly 20,000 men who fell on the Somme battlefield. Pt. Frank Docherty was killed with the 25th Battalion (Tyneside Irish), Northumberland Fusiliers in their attack up Sausage Valley on the morning of 1st July. Frank had played for Everton and Fulham before the war.

On the afternoon of 1st July 2nd Lt. Malcolm Fraser of the 2nd Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) took a patrol out into Mash Valley to find who was holding the front line trenches at Ovilliers. His orders were to return if fired upon; his patrol was fired upon and did return but without Malcolm Fraser. Malcolm was a founder member of CD Everton of Vina del Mar in Chile before the war and was a medical student in Edinburgh when war broke out.

Both Frank Docherty and Malcolm Fraser have no known grave and are remembered on the Thiepval Memorial.
