mike181 Posted 23 June , 2014 Share Posted 23 June , 2014 When the RFC became the RAF in 1918, was there a separate set of Records or did the Army medal Roll still encompass the RFC/RAF for the WW1 period?
rolt968 Posted 23 June , 2014 Share Posted 23 June , 2014 As far as I can see/ understand it. If medals were issued through/ for service in the RAF they appeared in the RAF record. My grandfather's 1914-15 Star (RFC) appears on his army MIC, but his BWM and Victory Medal appear on his RAF record. However there may be exceptions. Admin spof Posted 23 June , 2014 Admin Share Posted 23 June , 2014 There is some information here about researching RFC/RAF personnel. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person%5Cdefault.htm
David_Underdown Posted 24 June , 2014 Share Posted 24 June , 2014 Where BWM and Victory qualification resulted from RAF service, issue was via the Air Ministry - this is usually noted on medal index cards. Officers' RAF records are already online (record series AIR 76), while airmen's records are fully catalogued in AIR 79, and will soon be online via FindMyPast.
