Frank is the soldier 'Remembered Today' (13th June 2014)

Frank was a gardener who lived in 'The Mount', 1 Sunny Bank, Flimwell and had been born in 1891/2 to Charles, a road labourer, and Flora. His younger brother, Fred, would also enlist in the Royal Sussex Regiment, being killed with the 9th Bn in April 1916.

Frank enlisted at the outbreak of war, and was assigned to the 8th Bn, the pioneer battalion of the 18th Division, and he deployed to the Western Front with them on the 24th July 1915. At some point, undoubtedly after being wounded, Frank was posted to the 2nd Bn. On 5th June 1918 the 2nd Sussex took over the front line at Cuinchy, and it was a quiet period, with only desultory shelling and the battalion conducting a number of patrols. There is one incident that stands out, though, as the war diary describes "...One chance rifle grenade hit a box of bombs in a post in the Brickstacks and knocked out a Lewis gun team". A Lt. John Dickinson died of wounds he received on the 12th June and L/Cpl John Henry Smith (L/10336); Pte Alfred Hyland (SD/3897) and Pte Ernest Baldey (G/6590) were killed in action on the 12th, suggesting the 12th was the day the rifle grenade hit the Lewis Gun team. As the 2nd Sussex were relieved by the 2nd KRRC on the 13th with no reported incident, it could be suggested that Frank Golding was also a casualty from the incident, dying from his wounds the following day, especially as he is laid to rest at Cambrin Military Cemetery next to Smith, Hyland and Baldey ... we may never know for sure, just a suggestion.

Frank was 27 years old at the time of his death
