Help re Irish Grandad

As a result of checking some papers concerning my grandfather in connection with the Killester Village ex servicemen's estate, I noticed that on his discharge from the army in 1920 he was employed shortly after as a Harbour constable. Presumably the Port of Dublin Police. Later he is described as a customs officer this would be under the Irish Free State. Could any one help with the 'official' titles of these two organisations and is it probable that with the birth of a new state that a former warrant officer from the army would transfer into what would be a new customs service? No doubt many serving HM.Customs would just transfer to the new service as well.

Tony have a look at the link below, some backround info on the establishment of the revenue raising streams for the new Free State.By all accounts,Customs and Excise was an important branch in the Revenue department.

I do remember being told that the C&E had more powers than the Gardai but I cannot verify it.

Thanks will take a look. Certainly as a retired cop I can confirm that the HMC&E still has more powers than the civil police/gardai. Runs in the family Ihave a cousin who works at dublin Castle.
