Jesse Heyes - Royal Engineers Transport

Hello Everyone

I am looking to find some information on Jesse Heyes who I understand was a Sapper in the Royal Engineers. I am unsure about a date of birth but if he is the correct person for who I am searching he would have married a Sophia Rushton in 1901 in Blackburn Lancashire.

Can anyone advise me, please?

Fergus Jesse Heyes married Sophia Rushton in Blackburn district Jun quarter 1901 according to FreeBMD

Ancestry has just one medal card for an F.J. Heyes, 2Lt RE / Lt RE, qualified for 1915 star, British War and Victory Medals, with a note that his medals were applied for in 1926

No absolute proof that this is the same man of course. Do you know anything further about him?

Many thanks Heather C for your response. Unfortunately I do not have any further information. I have looked on Lancashire BMD for a birth for him without success. He could have course been born outside the County.

My paternal Grandmother was a Heyes but am unsure what was her with relationship Fergus Jesse Heyes. I will try the 1911 Census to see if there is a place of birth recorded.

Many thanks again

There are at least three birth entries that might be relevant and that also might indciate the FJ Heyes on the medal card above isn't your right man as he may be too old.

Fergus Jesse Heyes born Sep Q 1874, Blackburn District

Fergus James Heyes born Mar Q 1895, Blackburn District

Fergus James Heyes born Jun Q 1878 Chorlton

Fergus Jesse looks like he was born in Clayton le Moors (from the census entries) and there's also some hint he may have gone to New Zealand and died there before the war started.

It's all a bit complicated and really straying out of the military side here so I'll stop unless you have more military details about him!

Thank you HeatherC for all your research information, I am very grateful. However, I think I may have earmarked the wrong man.

Sincere apologies

No problem at all. Sometimes eliminating options is just as important. Glad to help.

Hello HeatherC

Apologies for troubling you again but I do have another name - William Heyes born 1889 in Blackburn Lancashire. He was my Maternal Grandmother's youngest brother. The reason I have been researching is that I was once told that one of my Grandmother's brothers was killed in action. I have found a L/Cpl W Heyes - Service No 201254 - East Lancashire Regiment on the CWWG Website (31 July 1917) and wondered whether this could be my Great Uncle. Would you be able to advise whether I am able to verify whether or not this soldier came from Blackburn?

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks for your support

Regards

Blackburnian.
