Guest Posted 3 June , 2014 Posted 3 June , 2014 Hello, I was wondering if anyone had any information on the 1/6 Royal Warwickshire Regiment during there formation to there time in Biaches during 1917. My great grandfather Henry Nichols was killed here during March. And I was hoping to try an gain just a small bit of info of the daily life in the battalion during 1917. Any information welcome
GraemeClarke Posted 3 June , 2014 Posted 3 June , 2014 Hi The War Diary is available to download for just over 3 quid http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/Details?uri=C7354608 You can then follow what he did every day until his death on 11 March 1917 Regards, Graeme
Colin W Taylor Posted 3 June , 2014 Posted 3 June , 2014 Micah The war diary may not provide much information; for 11 March 1917 it records: 'Biache, In trenches, casualties 2K 1W' One of the two killed was Nichols. However the war diary will provide, as Graeme states, plenty of background to your ancestor's service especially if you can identify, from his Medal index Card, when he might have joined the battalion in France. Kind regards Colin
GraemeClarke Posted 3 June , 2014 Posted 3 June , 2014 Hi Micah If you found that out I should go out and buy a lottery ticket !!!! very difficult, sometimes mentioned in the War Diary (not very often) or sometimes in the local newspapers. I do not think his service papers have survived. Regards, Graeme
Guest Posted 3 June , 2014 Posted 3 June , 2014 He was from Coventry. He worked in Coventry and played in the Coventry City Salvation Army Band. Something that continued to go though the family ending with me.There's a picture of him in the band at around he 20 the same age as me. It seems quite strange seeing his best friend who signed the marriage register on his wedding day who survived the war and Henry dying.Henry had 3 children one of which we never knew about. There are a few other names which I am researching. I have his medal card yet no date was given when he went overseasWhich is information I would love to know. As mentioned above his medal card gives no dates but being with the 1/6th may suggest he joined when the battalion went to France in around 1916 possibly. Thanks for all your help.
tharkin56 Posted 4 June , 2014 Posted 4 June , 2014 Henry resided at 98 westwood road. no photo appeared locally either in coventry graphic or herald let me know the names and I may have more info. Trevor
Guest Posted 4 June , 2014 Posted 4 June , 2014 I have added all the photos of Henry Nichols here. I am looking for a William Sherwin (Henry Nichols best man also featured on the photo) and William Northall who served with B battery 286th BDE Royal Field Artillery. Any infomation would be fantastic. I was also hoping to find some infomation on Kiboko Wood Cemetary well a location for it.
