Does anyone have any information about John Gauterin no. 31518, 2nd Battalion South Lancs k.i.a. 21/10/16 on the Somme. He lived in Farndon, Chehire and I believe his father was German.

Thanks, Jim

The 1891 census shows Charles Gauterin, a native of Friedricksdorf, Germany, living at The Lodge in Farndon. His occupation is shown as "Carrier". He is aged 41 and also there are his wife Jane (31) and children Mary (9), Elizabeth (7), Charles (6), Frederick (4), Jenny (3) and Arthur (11 months).

By 1901, the family had expanded some and there were now 5 additional children, all living still at the same address. Richard (9), John (7), Ernest (5), Emily (4) and 11 month old Beryl. Father Charles is now recorded as a "Bus Proprietor". All the children were born in Farndon.

SDGW has John Gauterin him as having died of wounds, and also having been formerly 1254 in the Cheshire Yeomanry.

Perhaps Frederick and John served in the Yeomanry together for a spell?

The 2/South Lancs attacked Stuff and Regina trenches on 21.10.16, jumping off from Stuff Redoubt.
