r30rvp Posted 29 May , 2014 Posted 29 May , 2014 Hello all I'm just wondering if there are any records of casualty clearing stations. Or as there where so many dead it was impossible to record. Just trying to find out where my solider (John DC Lyon 950654 KIA Zillebeke/Hodge area) may went before being buried at Menin Rd South Many thanks Rachel
Ken Lees Posted 29 May , 2014 Posted 29 May , 2014 If he was killed in action he wouldn't have been at a CCS or any other medical facility. He would be recorded as Died of Wounds if he had been treated at any such facility
r30rvp Posted 29 May , 2014 Author Posted 29 May , 2014 Cheers Ken So what would of happened to the dead, would they be taken straight to a cemetery?? Rachel
sotonmate Posted 29 May , 2014 Posted 29 May , 2014 Rachel Bombardier John Dudley Couldridge LYON was part of A Battery of 15 Brigade Royal Field Artillery,a part of 5 Division's artillery complement. He was killed in action, together with Sergeant Soloman WINCHURCH of the same unit, on 28 Oct 1917,and both are buried in Menin Road South Cemetery in graves quite close to each other. They may or may not have been killed nearby as some of the graves here have been moved in after the Armistice from smaller burial grounds. You may be able to find out more from the War Diary of 15 Bde RFA which is digital in the National Archives Discovery database, here: http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/Details?uri=C7352197 Casualties may have been collected to such as a Field Ambulance and kept until burial. The FA Diaires didn't keep a list of names of casualties, and the few CCSs for which sample records survive would likely only have recorded them in it's Admissions Registers if they were received as wounded.
r30rvp Posted 30 May , 2014 Author Posted 30 May , 2014 Morning Thank you very much I have the war diary you mention but unfortunately it doesn't mention him by name but on that date that there where many casualties including 3 others from his battery Winchurch being one of them. Winchurch is buried next door but 1 and the other 2 men are buried elsewhere, All starting to make sense now. Thank you very much again just tying up some lose ends Rachel
