Remembered Today: Private Arthur MANSFIELD, 4th Australian Pioneers who died on 27th May 1916, Strand Military Cemetery

Arthur Mansfield was killed by a H.E. shell 27/5/1917 (not 1916) – age 31

Buried Strand Military Cemetery, Ploegsteert, Hainaut, Belgium

Born 21/11/1886 in Belgaum, India – son of Ebenezer & Jane Mansfield, of Ilford, Essex & later of Bishopgate, London

Grew up & educated in Ilford, Essex

Occupation: Carpenter & Joiner

Came to Australia on the Otranto, departing London 9/5/1913

Trained in Football & Boxing – he was the winner of the middle weight boxing competition on the Otranto on his way to Brisbane – and was a member of the 1914 cup winning Brisbane Corinthians soccer team

Enlisted Qld 27/10/1914 – Pte 315, 15th Bn – tsfd to 4th Pioneers 16/3/1916
